Manchester United hammered 10-man West Brom 5-0 at The Hawthorns on Tuesday night, while Tottenham beat Stoke 3-1 and Aston Villa won 1-0 away.Champions United pulled three points clear at the Premier League summit for 24 hours at least courtesy of their win over rockbottom Albion.

The Baggies started brightly in a match delayed by 30 minutes due to traffic congestion on the M6 - but the visitors went ahead after 21 minutes through Dimitar Berbatov.

The Bulgarian came inside from the right wing and laid the ball off for Michael Carrick, who timed the return pass to perfection as Berbatov sprung the Baggies’ offside trap and fired low past Scott Carson from just inside the area.

The hosts were reduced to 10 men after 40 minutes when skipper Paul Robinson was handed a straight red card by referee Rob Styles after arriving late into a 50/50 challenge with United midfielder Park Ji-Sung.

Heidar Helguson scored a goal in each half as QPR continued their promotion push with a 3-0 Championship win at Blackpool on Tuesday.The Iceland international lived up to his reputation as a ruthless aerial predator when he headed home winger Wayne Routledge’s pinpoint cross to give his side a scarcely-deserved first-half lead.

Andy Ambler, the Lions managing director, admitted his club and others still had a long way to go to eradicate the “element” that turn up just to cause trouble.

He told Sky Sports News: “No one has worked harder than Millwall to solve this problem but we need to realise that this problem is still there.

“I don’t think we’re going back to the old days, but there were other incidents over the weekend unfortunately and we have to continue to work hard.

“Every club has this element, and it is an element we need to eradicate from the game because it’s damaging our national sport.

“We are not sure that (those involved) are Millwall fans. The majority of our fans are as upset about this as we are.

“We have a membership scheme which we are going to have to look at again because we sold nearly 3,000 tickets to members and season ticket holders and clearly some of these tickets got into the hands of these people who don’t normally come to Millwall games.”

The Football Association have called for the “strongest possible sanction” against the perpetrators.

“These are the sorts of things we never want to see in a football stadium,” an FA spokesman said.

“We are working with the clubs and the police to investigate what happened.”

Humberside Police are conducting an investigation into the events and are confident of catching the troublemakers.

Chief inspector Darren Downs told BBC Radio Five Live: “We have got CCTV evidence inside, we have got evidence gathering teams inside, there are photographs from press photographers.

“To be honest we know an awful lot of them already. We know the names, we know the faces because they have been involved in smaller level stuff and they have been trouble-causers for a while.

“I feel confident that virtually everyone involved in the disorder on Saturday will, at some point in the next few months, be brought to justice.”

Hull chairman Paul Duffen, who confirmed his club would be seeking compensation from Millwall as a “private matter” between the clubs, added: “It’s a difficulty in football generally to know exactly who you’re selling tickets to.

“Certainly the people who caused this trouble were not Millwall fans, they were mindless hooligans who came under the guise of Millwall fans.”

He also defended his club’s segregation policy, adding on Sky Sports News: “There was no problem with segregation when the stadium opened, the difficulty was that because this group of people came with single intention of undermining the security in the stadium the first thing they did was tear up the segregation netting and we had to put a human barrier of stewards in place instead.

“The segregation we had on Saturday was absolutely adequate for hundreds of other games.”

Jeffrey De Visscher is set to leave SPL outfit Aberdeen to return to Holland in a bid to play regular first-team football.The 27-year-old is in his homeland discussing terms with Cambuur Leeuwarden after getting permission to leave from Dons boss Jimmy Calderwood.

Calderwood told his club’s website: “He was disappointed that he wasn’t getting first-team football.

“He is a great player, but I think the way the game goes in Scotland doesn’t suit his style of play.

“He is more suited to a 4-3-3 formation and that doesn’t happen so much over here.”

De Visscher’s contract was due to run out at the end of the season.

Arsenal have agreed a fee with Zenit St Petersburg to sign Andrei Arshavin, although a deal is still some way from being concluded.The Gunners have been locked in talks with Zenit for some time over the services of the Russia international, who shone at Euro 2008.

Zenit have not revealed the figure Arsenal have bid for the 27-year-old, although they claim the fee is the ‘real market value of the player’.

“The fundamental understanding over the transfer of the player has been achieved between the clubs,” read a statement on Zenit’s official website.

“At the moment the basic obstacle in realising the transaction is Andrei Arshavin’s personal requirements.”

Arshavin, who interested Barcelona last summer, is now discussing personal terms with Arsene Wenger’s side, but Zenit say his lofty demands are currently outside the Premier League outfit’s budget.

“He’s someone who is improving all the time, but he has to go to a club where he’s going to play and keep improving.

“It is no secret we have had scouts from many clubs here at Tynecastle and that is a positive thing for me.

“Andrew wants to keep developing and, if the opportunity does come, he must decide if a particular move is right for him.

“He has a lot of people advising him. I am not his agent or his father - I am his manager and I would be happy for him to go to a higher stage if the situation was right for everyone.
