The Royals took an early lead when Chris Armstrong swung in a cross which Wolves defender Neill Collins accidentally flicked into his own net.
Reading should have doubled their advantage just before the break but James Harper could only shoot straight at Wayne Hennessey from close range.
Collins’ miserable night came to a premature end as he was sent off late on for foul and abusive language in injury-time.
Birmingham moved to within four points of Wolves as they overcame a stubborn Derby side 1-0 at St Andrews.
City struggled to break Derby down in a scrappy first half but Lee Carsley headed the winner just before the hour when he headed home a Hameur Bouazza cross.
Matthew Spring’s first-half strike was enough to give Charlton their first win in 19 matches against Crystal Palace at The Valley.
Lloyd Sam found Spring in the box and he thumped a drive past Julian Speroni to give the hosts their first league win since October 4.

Emile Heskey marked his Aston Villa debut with the winning goal as Portsmouth’s woes continued with a 1-0 defeat at Fratton Park.
Tony Adams’ troops were undone in the 21st minute when Brad Friedel’s booming kick downfield was flicked on twice by Villa players, Gabriel Agbonlahor getting the second, telling touch through to new £3.5million signing Heskey who drove home unerringly to the left of David James.
Pompey ended the game with 10 men after Nadir Belhadj saw red for a second yellow after 71 minutes.
The final game of the night ended in a 1-0 win for Sunderland against Fulham at the Stadium of Light.
The only goal arrived after 55 minutes, Kenwyne Jones celebrating his new contract extension in style as he reacted quickest to fire home on the rebound after Djibril Cisse’s snap-shot had been parried by Mark Schwarzer.

Manchester United hammered 10-man West Brom 5-0 at The Hawthorns on Tuesday night, while Tottenham beat Stoke 3-1 and Aston Villa won 1-0 away.Champions United pulled three points clear at the Premier League summit for 24 hours at least courtesy of their win over rockbottom Albion.
The Baggies started brightly in a match delayed by 30 minutes due to traffic congestion on the M6 - but the visitors went ahead after 21 minutes through Dimitar Berbatov.
The Bulgarian came inside from the right wing and laid the ball off for Michael Carrick, who timed the return pass to perfection as Berbatov sprung the Baggies’ offside trap and fired low past Scott Carson from just inside the area.
The hosts were reduced to 10 men after 40 minutes when skipper Paul Robinson was handed a straight red card by referee Rob Styles after arriving late into a 50/50 challenge with United midfielder Park Ji-Sung.
And the hosts’ night lurched from bad to worse a minute before the interval as Carson spilled Ryan Giggs’ inswinging free-kick inside the six-yard box and Carlos Tevez pounced to put United two goals clear.
Nemanja Vidic ended any outside hopes the hosts may have had of mounting a late fightback when he nodded home United’s third after an hour, while Cristiano Ronaldo completed the rout with a quickfire brace.
There was even more reason for the visitors to celebrate in the 84th minute as United broke Chelsea’s record for going the longest without conceding a goal in the Premier League.
Tottenham handed a debut to new signing Carlo Cudicini against Stoke but the former Chelsea goalkeeper was rarely called on to perform any heroics as Spurs ran out comfortable 3-1 winners at White Hart Lane.
Harry Redknapp’s side went ahead after just eight minutes, Aaron Lennon receiving a cross-field pass from Jermain Defoe and running at the Stoke defence before finishing with a low left-footed effort under Thomas Sorensen.
The hosts moved further ahead after 21 minutes, good interplay in the midfield between Luka Modric and Roman Pavlyuchenko resulting in the Russian striker delivering a superb throughball for Defoe to run in behind the Stoke defence and lash home low at Sorensen’s near post. Watch Live Streaming

Former Watford and Fulham striker Helguson, ploughing a loan furrow up front for the visitors, was the man who opened the scoring as he powered home Routledge’s incisive cross with a header which left Paul Rachubka no chance.
Blackpool had been in thorough command of the game prior to conceding and did their best to respond immediately but midfielder David Vaughan’s 20-yard shot was punched clear by Camp.
QPR’s Portuguese manager Sousa handed a debut to former Manchester United and Celtic midfielder Liam Miller following his loan arrival from Sunderland while defender Kaspars Gorkss lined up against his former club.
The equaliser that was threatening throughout the opening period almost came just 20 seconds into the second half but David Fox’s stinging drive from 20 yards out was bravely blocked by defender Gavin Mahon.
But again they were punished for their profligacy when the visitors were awarded a penalty in the 58th minute.
Referee had little hesitation in pointing to the spot following a blatant trip by defender Evatt as Cook
surged into the area and Helguson stepped up to calmly stroke home his second goal of the evening.
Grayson threw on new-boy Nemeth for the ineffective Roy O’Donovan on the hour mark in a bid to breathe fire into his stuttering attack.
And things went from bad to worse for the hosts when their third and final substitute Crainey, in only his second appearance of the season, was forced to leave the field of play after just 14 minutes on the pitch.
Their misery was compounded in the final minute when Ephraim applied a cool finish to Cook’s threaded through-ball to make it 3-0.
